this is the recipe of life
said my mother
as she held me in her arms as i wept
think of those flowers you plant
in the garden each year
they will teach you
that people too
must wilt
fall
root
rise
in order to bloom

Five Reasons Why You Need To Read The Sun And Her Flowers

Rupi never fails to take my heart in her writer's hands, squeeze it until it feels pain, then repairs it all over again. I connect so deeply to this book, especially to the theme of wilting, falling, rooting, rising, blooming. There's a reason I love the word "bean sprout;" it's because a sprout is the product of a seed that has fallen from a wilted plant, was submerged in the darkness of the earth, yet still managed to push through and rise above. Keep going, keep growing. So when I read this book, it felt like a piece of my heart came home. To say I love it is an understatement. Rupi does all the artwork by herself, and I'm contemplating getting one of her designs as a tattoo one day.
