Written on 10th September Posted in Film. It opens in with the eponymous character falling for a beautiful young girl, Nola Kellergan. The next scene, set later, sees Nola seeking refuge in the house of an old lady, who is promptly murdered by an unseen assailant. If reading the novel is not evidence enough of how right our North American cousins were, their criticism is further validated by the adaptation.
The truth is… I was really looking forward to this new, American crime series and I really wanted to like it. A sense of place is important in crime drama any drama, in fact as it gives us a visual and psychological reference point, not just geographically but also in terms of language and dialect, local traditions and behaviour. Maine is framed lovingly — lush forests, ochre hues, quaint road-side diners and peace and quiet with coastal splash-spots aplenty. The first scene transports us back to the mids, where Harry, a famous novelist, is doing what romanticised versions of novelists do: sitting on the seashore, waves rolling in, writing, engaging his inner muse and sketching in his notepad. Like instantly. There was no chat, no to-and-fro, no slow development of friendship.
