Cold: Extreme Adventures at the Lowest Temperatures on Earth by Ranulph Fiennes

Few humans have evolved who can survive and thrive in the bitter cold. Below a certain temperature, death is inevitable. This book is about this aspect of our environment and about Sir Ranulph Fiennes own life experiencing the extreme cold, from his adventuring apprenticeship 40 years ago on the Greenland Ice Cap to masterminding over the past 5 years the crossing of the Antarctic during winter; the coldest journey on Earth, where temperatures will regularly plummet to minus 92?C.
Cold has altered history on many great occasions. Hannibal crossed the high Alps under conditions of extreme cold; soldiers of the mighty armies of Hitler and Napoleon died in their thousands on the frozen Russian steppes from frostbite gangrene. In the past 150 years men and women have also seen the cold as a natural challenge as adventurers and explorers from all over the world have attempted to conquer the coldest regions of the globe.
Today, parts of the world subject to extreme cold are the focus of intense geopolitical pressure, as President Putin claims Arctic coastal waters to be Russian, in readiness for the predicted melting of sea-ice, sending submarines to plant Russian flags on the seabed as a warning to would-be non-Russian mineral prospectors, and similar claims are made on the Antarctic. And yet a few degrees of climate change in Antarctica could easily trigger the detachment of huge ice sheets which would slide into the Southern Ocean. As sea levels rise some of the biggest coastal cities in the world would be submerged - a catastrophe that would render insignificant the most devastating of past tsunamis.
Sir Ranulph Fiennes has spent a lifetime working in conditions of extreme cold - his frostbitten fingers are a testament to the horrors that man can experience in such temperatures, but he also knows that the life he has led owes a great deal to the cold. Both scientifically rigorous, historically questioning and intensely personal, this book is both a warning of the dangers we face with our relationship to the cold and celebration of a life lived in some of the extremist temperatures known to man.

Can a Christian be an Anarchist?

Christian anarchism

The following video will make it very clear that anarchism is all about rebellion against authority, from the local cop to God himself. Anarchists see the evil in society and government, and they conclude that if man were free of all constraint and authority, he would become civilized and at peace. They do not take into consideration the nature of man: Jeremiah KJV The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? If you want to take the time to understand what anarchism is as a philosophy, watch this video. I believe any Bible believer needs to understand what anarchy is, AND we all need to understand that anarchists are very much with us in this nation. Please watch the whole video:. We have talked about this before, right?

Christian anarchism is a movement in political theology that claims anarchism is inherent in Christianity and the Gospels. It therefore rejects the idea that human governments have ultimate authority over human societies. Christian anarchists denounce the state , believing it is violent, deceitful and, when glorified, idolatrous. Under the "Reign of God", human relationships would be characterized by divided authority, servant leadership , and universal compassion—not by the hierarchical, authoritarian structures that are normally attributed to religious social order. More than any other Bible source, the Sermon on the Mount is used as the basis for Christian anarchism. Jacques Ellul , a French philosopher and Christian anarchist, notes that the final verse of the Book of Judges Judges states that there was no king in Israel and that "everyone did as they saw fit". He warned that a human king would lead to militarism , conscription and taxation , and that their pleas for mercy from the king's demands would go unanswered.

Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

Is it possible for a Christian; a follower of Jesus Christ to be a pacifist and an anarchist, who simply rejects all forms of violence and all worldly systems of government and business…? Thanks for writing! You ask an intriguing question. Pacifism and anarchy seem like an odd combination to me. Of course, for anarchists to succeed, it helps to have a lot of pacifists around. There have been plenty throughout history.
