What is Every Moment Holy?
“Every Moment Holy,” Liturgy, and Everyday Life: Doug McKelvey (Podcast)
Jesus is the Lord not just of the Sabbath, but every day of the week. In this collection of liturgies for everyday life, Douglas McKelvey uses his strong talents for poetry to help the reader connect their daily activities with the grace of God. While many of the liturgies are designed to be spoken in small groups, most can easily be read as a single person praising their Maker. Liturgies are provided for various hours of the day, mealtimes, being in awkward situations, drinking coffee, doing laundry, finishing a good book, going camping, and welcoming a pet into the family, as well as many, many more. It feels like leather binding.

That means that every activity from preaching a sermon, to washing dirty laundry, to cooking dinner should be done to the glory of God. His book Every Moment Holy is an expression of these ideas. Every Moment Holy is a collection of liturgies, prayers that remember God in what Luther called the mundane faithfulness of everyday life. A liturgy for feasting with friends. Published by The Rabbit Room an arts community that has grown up around musician Andrew Peterson and his brother dramatist Pete Peterson, Every Moment Holy has now sold tens of thousands of copies and future additions of the book are already on the way. I had this conversation with Doug McKelvey in Nashville and I began by asking him to read the first liturgy in Every Moment Holy, a liturgy that explains why he wrote the book and what his prayer is for the book. Let me be diligent to the discipline and the labor required, but let me never forget that all such measured faithfulness yields only a polished stone, meaningless until it is stirred from within by your breath, until it is set by you in a crown of your own crafting.
